불멸의, 영원한: 不滅의 (immortal(imperishable, undying, undestroyable, unfading, eternal), 不灭[búmiè], ふめつ, impérissable(immortel), inmortal, unvergänglich 

▶ W. Faulkner는 20세기 가장 영향력인 작가로 1949년 노벨문학상을 수여했다. “ 저는 인간이 단순히 참고 견디는 것이 아니라 극복하고 이길 것이라고 믿습니다. 인간은 유일하게 무한한 목소리를 가진 생명체이기 때문이 아니라, 영혼 즉 연민과 희생과 인내할 수 있는 있는 정신을 가졌기 때문에 영원합니다.”
“I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustiable voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.” (William Faulkner (1897 – 1962) - an American writer and Nobel Prize laureate from Oxford, Mississippi   

▶ 무협영화 거장인 이소룡은 Lee는 불멸(不滅)에 대해 “불멸의 열쇠는 먼저 기억할만한 가치 있는 삶을 사는 것이다.”
“The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering.” (Bruce Lee (1940 – 1973) - a Hong Kong-American actor, film director, martial artist, philosopher and founder of the martial art Jeet Kune Do (절권도).

▶ 그리스의 철학자 소크라테스는 “모든 인간의 영혼은 영원하지만 정의로운 영혼이 영원하고 신성하다.”
All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine. Socrates (470/469 – 399 BC) - a classical Greek (Athenian) philosopher

▶ 이소룡의 아들이자 배우인 B. Lee는 “불사(不死)는 옳은 일을 하면서 뒤에 흔적을 남기며 인생을 사는 것이다.” 
Immortality is to live your life doing good things, and leaving your mark behind. (Brandon Lee (1965 – 1993) - an American actor and martial artist)

▶ 부처님께서 설파(說破)하시길 “증오는 증오로 그치게 하는 것이 아니라 사랑으로 그치게 하느니라. 이것이 불변의 진리이니라.
“Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.” (Buddha)

▶ 영국의 소설가 C. S. Lewis는 “인간은 양서류(兩棲類)이다 – 반은 영혼이고 반은 동물이다. 영혼은 영원의 세계에 속하고 동물로는 유한한 세계에 산다.”
“Humans are amphibians - half spirit and half animal. As spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time.” (C. S. Lewis ( 1898 – 1963) - a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist)

▶ 철학자 니체는 “불멸하려면 엄청난 대가를 지불해만해요; 여러 번 죽어야 살아남지요.” 
“One has to pay dearly for immortality; one has to die several times while one is still alive.” (Friedrich Nietzsche)

▶ 이태리 통일을 위해 힘썼던 주세페 마치니는 “인류를 위해 죽을 준비가 되어 있는 한 우리나라는 영원할 겁니다.”
“So long as you are ready to die for humanity, the life of your country is immortal.” (Giuseppe Mazzini (1805 – 1872) - an Italian politician, journalist, activist)

▶ 로마 철학자 키케로는 “본래 우리에게 주어진 생명은 짧지만 보람 있게 잘 산 삶은 영원히 기억되지요.”
“The life given us, by nature is short but the memory of a well spent life is eternal.” (Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC – 43 BC) - a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer)

“짧게 살고도 오래 사는 이가 있다. 그의 이름이 개척자다.”(경상대학교 교비)라는 글귀가 떠오르네요. 
 
무엇이 오래 사는 길인가? 영혼이 묻어나는 삶(life smeared with soul)이 아닐까요?
