☺ 1990년 Gulf 전을 승리로 이끈 N. Schwarzkopf 장군은 West Point 사관학교 시절 “젊은 사관생도로서 우리의 좌우명은 ‘의무, 명예, 조국’이었다. 그러나 남동 아시아의 벼논에서부터 중동의 모래밭에 이르기까지 전장(戰場)에서 그 모토의 완전한 의미를 알게 되었다. 그곳에서 인종, 신념, 출신지가 다른 용감한 미국 젊은이들의 전투를 보았고, 때론 ‘의무, 명예, 조국’을 위해 목숨 바치는 청년을 보았다.”

I asked God for strength that I might achieve; I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

큰일을 이루기 위해 힘을 달라고 하느님께 기도했더니 순종의 겸손을 배우라고 연약함을 주셨습니다. 
더 큰일을 해 낼  수 있도록 건강을 구했더니 보다 가치 있는 일을 하라고 병을 주셨습니다. 
행복해지고 싶어 부유함을 구했더니 지혜로워지라고 가난을 주셨습니다.
세상 사람들의 칭찬을 듣고 싶어 권력을 구했더니 신의 도움을 구하도록 연약함을 주셨습니다. 
삶을 누릴 수 있도록 모든 것을 갖게 해 달라고 구했더니 모든 것을 누릴 수 있는 삶 그 자체를 선물로 주셨습니다. 

구한 것 하나도 얻진 못했어도 내 소원 모두 들어 주셨습니다. 
나 자신도 모르게 내 맘 속에 진작 표현하지 못한 기도도 모두 들어 주셨습니다.
