  사전에 Honour-즉 명예, 영광, 존중, 우등이 내포(內包)하는 근간(根幹, 뿌리, 바탕)에는  존경(respect), 뿌듯함(being proud), 그리고 정직(honesty)이 자리하고 있다. 윌리엄 쿠퍼가 전하는 대로 “이기적인 원칙 위에 세운 영광은 수치스럽고 죄악이다.”라고 하지 않는가. 
자화자찬(自畵自讚)으로 자기의 명예를 드높이고자 하는 소인배(小人輩)가 너무나 넘쳐흐르는 것 같아 씁쓸하다.
‘하루를 살아도 명예롭게 살아라.’ ‘그 자리가 뭐라고 양심을 팔려고 하나.‘
 
  너무 작은 것일 수도 있지만 오래전 캘리포니아대학교 재학 시 최고 학점은 4.0이다. 평점(G.P.A; grade point average)이 A 학점이면 4.0이다. 그러나 성적표에 학점을 보면 A⁺가 있다. 그것은 평점에 계산되지 않은 honour 학점이다. 이왕이면 4.3 만점(straight A’s)으로 표시해 주면 안 될까? 명예를 실리보다 앞세우기 때문 아닐까?
