틱낫한 스님의 “화”에 나오는 말입니다. “부처님 가르침에 행복의 가장 본질은 자유(해탈(解脫)-emancipation)이다. 여기서 말하는 자유란 정치적 자유가 아니라 분노, 절망, 질투, 망상의 정신적 속박으로부터의 자유이니라.”

마틴 루터 킹 목사님의 ‘Have a Dream Speech’에 나오는 말씀이지요. “우리, 언젠가는 자유로울 수 있음을 알기에, 믿음으로 함께 일하고, 함께 기도하고, 함께 투쟁하고, 감옥 가고, 자유를 위해 함께 일어설 수 있습니다.”

자유(自由)란 무엇인가? 왜 그것을 얻기 위해 그토록 많은 피를 제물로 바쳤는가? 그것이 육체적 자유이건 정신적 자유이건…. 자유가 방종(放縱)과 다름은 상대에 대한 배려요 존중이지요.
