★ “질문하라!” - 이것이 오천 년 유대인 교육의 비밀이다. (마빈 토케이어)
어느 날 하늘나라에서 모세, 예수, 마르크스, 프로이드, 아인슈타인 등 유대인 다섯 명이 모여 토론을 했다. ‘인간 행동을 규정하는 것은 무엇인가’라는 주제였다. 먼저 모세가 “인간이 인간이게 하는 것은 이성(理性)”이라고 단언했다. 그러자 예수가 “그게 아니고 사랑”이라고 주장했다. 마르크스가 손을 내 저으며 “모든 것은 밥통, 즉 경제가 결정한다.”라고 말했다. 그때 프로이트가 끼어들며 “인간 행동을 규정하는 본질은 성(性)‘이라 반박했다. 논쟁이 길어지자 조용히 앉아 있던 아인슈타인이 “모든 것은 상대적(相對的)”이라는 말로 토론을 마무리 지었다. 우스갯소리이다. 그러나 일리 있는 우스갯소리이다. 무슨 질문이든 좋다. 그것을 어떻게 받아들이고, 현답(賢答)을 내면 더 훌륭하다. 훌륭한 질문 속엔, 엉뚱함, 상상력, 배려, 창의성, 인성, 지혜 등등 무한한 가능성을 담을 수 있다. 그것이 진정한 교육의 기저(基底)가 아니겠는가?
이런 책이 있다. 기상천외(奇想天外)한 질문도 답을 얻을 수 있다. 근접한 답이라도.
“Ask whatever you want to ask.” 큰 질문이 새로운 답을 얻을 수 있게 한다.
