この寺は、倭寇を防御しその中で僧兵を育成するために晋州城を再建したものと推定されている。

壬辰倭乱(文祿の役)当時、僧侶軍の根拠地となった。第2次晋州城戦闘の際、城を守るため命を捧げた僧兵を賛えるべく、粛宗王が「護国社」という名で再建したと伝えられている。
